Alyssa Barba L.Ac.

Alyssa is a licensed Acupuncturist, a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine, and a Board Certified Herbalist. Alyssa received her Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAOM) from the Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts in Asheville, North Carolina, and is currently completing her doctorate degree (DACM).

Alyssa is trained in Classical Chinese Medicine, based on the teachings of Master Jeffrey Yuen. This system utilizes five channel systems in order to treat a wide variety of conditions. Alyssa specializes in psycho-emotional conditions: trauma, depression, anxiety, grieving the loss of a loved one, a feeling of disconnection from one's authentic self and a feeling of disconnection from one's heart. She also has a deep understanding of the ways in which ancestral trauma can energetically play into long-term depression and anxiety. To treat these conditions Alyssa utilizes a 4-6 hour psycho-emotional vibrational energy technique that she learned during her advanced training and mentorship with Leta Herman. Alyssa also uses the luo vessel technique to release unexpressed emotions from the body, and five element protocols. In addition, she specializes in pain management, utilizing the sinew meridian technique. Alyssa also has experience treating: sinus congestion, colds and flus, stress, digestive issues, skin conditions, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, cancer support, and menstrual irregularities.

Alyssa discovered Chinese Medicine after studying neuroscience and Eastern meditation practices. She fell in love with Chinese Medicine as it synthesized her passion for medical science and Eastern healing arts. Alyssa has been practicing meditation for the past nine years, and has been studying qigong for five years. She currently spends most of her free time maintaining her qi gong practice.

4-6 hour psycho-emotional energy treatments:

Grieving Treatment:

The grieving treatment helps move a person through the pain and loss that occur after a loved one passes. In Chinese medicine, prolonged sadness and grief can make the qi (energy) descend. This creates a sensation of heaviness, and a sense of being weighed down. The grieving treatment uses a combination of acupuncture points that clear that heavy energy from the body, so that you leave feeling lighter and more at ease.

This treatment is best for individuals who are having trouble coping with the loss of a loved one after one year. The session takes 4-6 hours because it can take a long time to come into a place of ease after a really painful experience. During the session an iPod containing 20,000 songs of all genres will be selected at random. The music creates a vibrational guide for the treatment.

The Nine-Heart Pains Treatment/Loving yourself treatment:

The nine-heart pains treatment is used when a specific area of life: career, relationships, health, wealth, home (a sense of belonging), adventure/travel, children/creativity, wisdom or prosperity is not coming together, and is creating heart pain. This treatment is most helpful for individuals who have trouble with low self-esteem or self-love, for those trying to overcome an addiction, and for those who have never felt “at home” in their bodies, or in their lives. This treatment uses acupuncture points on the heart and pericardium meridians to unravel the conditioning through which we psychologically try to protect ourselves from pain, but inadvertently end up blocking our hearts truest expression.

The pericardium is the heart protector. It modulates the fluctuations in the heart in order to keep us safe. The heart has a natural desire for openness, curiosity, and expansion. Sometimes this dynamic between the hearts natural pursuit of freedom, and the pericardium’s role of protection is totally out of sync. We might live in fear and be limited by the pericardium’s habit of contraction. Or we might live in states of wild reckless abandon due to our hearts unchecked desires, and frustrations around not being able to fulfill the true longing underlying those desires.

Most of us are fluctuating somewhere between states of too much contraction or too much expansion. The nine-heart pains treatment helps to modulate this relationship between the heart and pericardium, so that our hearts can express themselves with confidence and ease.

The session is 4-6 hours because shifting the way we habitually move through the world takes time. During the session an iPod containing 20,000 songs of all genres will be selected at random. The music creates a vibrational guide for the treatment.

Internal Heart Block Treatment:

The internal heart block treatment is for those who feel they don’t have access to their heart. The heart is the ultimate guide in life, and if we feel like we can’t access that internal compass, then we can feel lost. This treatment is helpful for those who feel inaccessible to their true selves and to others, and for those who feel walled off from the world. It is also helpful for those who have never felt the same after a traumatic event or long-term emotional upset.

The session is 4-6 hours because connecting with the space of the heart can take time if we’ve been closed off from it. During the session an iPod containing 20,000 songs of all genres will be selected at random. The music creates a vibrational guide for the treatment.

The Thirteen Ghost Points:

The thirteen-ghost points treatment is used when past traumas or negative experiences are preventing you from being present in your life. Rehashing memories of the past creates mental images, which according to Chinese medicine requires financing with qi (energy) and blood to continue to maintain. Departing from the present moment to fixate on these mental projections exhausts the qi and blood overtime. The body responds to the depletion of these inner resources by trying to conserve them, which ends up creating stagnation. This stagnation in the qi and blood over time negatively affects the spirit, which is always seeking freedom and presence. The thirteen-ghost points treatment helps to make you feel free in your life by un-hooking the traumatic memories, and skeletons in your closet, that perpetuate obsessive thinking and prevent you from moving forward.

The session is 4-6 hours because changing the way we habitually move through the world takes time. During the session an iPod containing 20,000 songs of all genres will be selected at random. The music creates a vibrational guide for the treatment.

Will Block Treatment:

The will block treatment is for those who feel they can’t accomplish what they wish to accomplish, or for those who were discouraged from expressing their authentic self by an overbearing parent or another significant person in their life. Treating a will block reestablishes a patient with their true qi, and connects them back up with the source of their energy.

The session is 4-6 hours because it can take awhile to unblock something that has been blocked for a long time. During the session an iPod containing 20,000 songs of all genres will be selected at random. The music creates a vibrational guide for the treatment.

Standard 1 hour treatments:

Luo vessel treatments:

Classical Chinese medicine consists of five channel systems that function at different energetic layers of the body. The primary channels are the main meridians that most acupuncturists use. The luo vessels function at the level of the blood, and are the main channels for releasing unexpressed emotions. In Chinese medicine, blood stores the emotions. According to Classical Chinese medicine, the body creates spider veins when it’s overwhelmed by the emotional events in our lives. The body takes the toxic emotions out of the body’s primary circulation, our main veins, and moves them out to the spider veins. Different types of emotional struggles show up as spider veins on different locations on the body. Draining these little spider veins frees up a persons vital energetic resources by unblocking the yang qi. Yang qi is the energy of life and vitality. Releasing these emotional toxins enables the body to restore its circulation, and return to homeostasis.

It is a relief to let go of toxic emotions, and it helps the health of the body because toxic emotions create excess heat in the body, which over time can cause inflammation, and generate other health concerns. Luo vessel work is great to do in conjunction with psychotherapy. These treatments are done in a series, and are administered every other day for 21 treatments (42 days). On the days you can’t come into the clinic, specific essential oils are applied to specific acupuncture points.

Sinew meridian treatments:

Classical Chinese medicine consists of five channel systems that function at different energetic layers of the body. The primary channels are the main meridians that most acupuncturists use. The sinew meridians are the most superficial channel system in the body, and they cover the bodies entire surface. Sinew meridians are primarily for working with the muscles and tendons, and are excellent for treating pain, stiffness, tightness, acute and chronic injuries. A very superficial level needling technique is used to restore the movement of blood and qi and improve range of motion.

Kathlene Emond Practitioner Bio

Kathlene Emond MSTOM, L.Ac., Dipl. of OM

Kathlene is a licensed Acupuncturist in CT and NY, a Board Certified Herbalist, and a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine as granted by the NCCAOM. She received her Master’s of Science degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine (MSTOM) from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York, NY. Her main training was in TCM style acupuncture, however she has training in Classical style and Electro-stim acupuncture from her mentors in these fields.

Additionally, she trained outside of school under the supervision of two acupuncturists where she was exposed to Five Element style acupuncture, orthopedic and sports medicine, and

post-surgical rehabilitation/scar therapy.

Kathlene has always wanted to figure out how the world works, and also how to help people. as well as continuing graduate level counseling classes at Southern Connecticut State University. When she got diagnosed with Hashimoto’s

and MTHFR, she started down other paths of “alternative” healing. It was a long time before

she discovered the powerful combination of acupuncture and internal herbal medicine, and

immediately decided to become a practitioner to help more people have access to this

medicine. She later pursued a certification from the state of New York for Mental Health First

Aid Training in order to provide another necessary level of care to her patients from a holistic

perspective. As such, she excels at holding space and treating mental health and trauma

related issues.

She has extensive knowledge on a personal level about the treatment of autoimmune

conditions and digestive health from both Eastern and Western perspectives, and has been

able to manage her condition without Western medication through acupuncture, herbs,

supplements, and dietary modification. She had the good fortune to both learn from and

receive treatment from Dr. Heidi Lovie, DACM, a nationally respected authority on the treatment

of Hashimoto’s. While Western medication is sometimes very necessary, Kathlene believes it is

very important to explore all possible avenues of treatment starting with the least invasive

methods. She is very aware of how challenging chronic illness can be physically, mentally, and

spiritually. She is passionate and committed to helping her patients regain hope. True healing is

not going back to how things were before, it is fully accepting the present moment as it is, and

beginning anew from the place we are now.

Kathlene’s personal wellness regimen includes Chinese medicine (acupuncture, herbs, and

moxa), Qi Gong 6 healing sounds practice, Meditation, Buddhist chanting, Gratitude journaling,

and an Audible addiction to self-help books, especially the work of Dr. Brené Brown.

Kim is so very caring and warm! This was my first acupuncture visit ever, and she was kind enough to give me a run down of how it all works and what’s comfortable and normal. She even helped me with insurance questions. I would 100% recommend her to all my friends/family.

I was on medication for Graves’ disease and suffered all the horrible symptoms that go along with it. Since August I was taken off all my medications, I was told by the traditional doctors that wasn’t possible at least for another year. She is very knowledgeable and she works on all my symptoms I always leave feeling a lot better then I did when I came in. I am shocked by the results I went to acupuncture as a last resort, I didn’t expect I would be able to come off medication just thought I would be able to manage my symptoms. I am extremely happy with my results. I highly recommend her if you have a chronic illness for me it was magical! Kristine M. 10/1/19

I moved here about 8 months ago looking for an acupuncturist to continue my regular care. I have lupus and a lot of joint problems and well PSTD and anxiety issues.

I don’t think I would be able to make through my weeks and take care of my family with out my regular Kim sessions. She’s amazing. Knows my body so well and extremely patient to make sure she has giving me all the right needling in the right spots.

I’d be lost with out her!

I highly recommend North Nassau Acupuncture because prior to finding this amazing group of professionals, I had a bad experience with acupuncture and was extremely hesitant to try again. But, I finally decided to try again and I am so glad I did.

I have been going for acupuncture for over a year and can't believe how acupuncture has helped me with hot flashes, knee osteoarthritis, sinuses and heel spurs. I never expected so much improvement and I am now a true believer in acupuncture. They helped me resolve my fears by being totally understanding, professional, listening and answering questions, and making me feel comfortable.

North Nassau Acupuncture has a comfortable and calming environment and I am relaxed during my sessions which I never thought I would be able to do. I am truly grateful that I was recommended to your practice.

I was very skeptical at first bc I've heard a lot of negative things about acupuncture in the past, but after going here. .all my negativity has gone away.

I first came here bc my orthopedic dr told me I'd need open knee surgery to repair some issues I was having. I heard from a colleague that they went to acupuncture for a similar issue and it worked miracles in him. I was open to anything at that time do went in and was doing 2x a week for 3 months as recommended by Meghan.

After that initial 3 months, I started feeling better so cut it down to every other week. Shortly after that, I was able to run again without any discomfort.

Now I'm song them to help with my post shingles pain as I haven't been able to sleep for weeks. ..and last week was the first time I slept in ages.

Meghan is a true miracle worker. Her prices are very reasonable and her facilities Are very professional, clean, warm and cozy.

I highly recommend her to everyone I come in contact with who needs an acupuncturist.

I just want to say that I can't thank NNA enough for all that they have done and continues to do for me. This is my go to place to destress, feel energized, recharged, and zen. Meg is very knowledgable, kind, caring, patient and attends to the needs of her patients. She is very warm and welcoming and wants the best for her patients. Meg's and Angela's goals from my experience is to make sure that you feel relaxed, worry free and a different person. They want to know that you are always feeling your best and will do whatever it takes. Since coming to you both, I feel much more grounded, less stressed and zen! You are just amazing! You have a gift and are full of inspiration!

This place is a place away from home and so grateful to have found it and my life has changed for the better! I'm so appreciative of you Meg and thanks for referring me to go to Sabrina when you were not in the office. Angela is just a doll as well! She is part of my care as well filled with positive energy! If they see you are unhappy or upset, they will take that extra time to help you to be happy. She is one in a million just like you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Meg has been treating me twice a week for the past four years, addressing everything from back pain to bellyaches with knowledge and care. I suffer from several chronic conditions and must be very careful (as we all should) about who I trust with my health, and I trust Meg thoroughly. She patiently answers the many questions I have about how acupuncture and eastern medicine works. Meg is also an herbalist who will suggest or customize an formula to suit the patient's needs. Due to a combination of herbs and acupuncture treatments, I've actually managed to avoid antibiotics for sinus infections several times.

On occasion I see Angela, an equally experienced and enjoyable practitioner!

I can confidently (and often do!) recommend North Nassau Acupuncture to just about anyone with any ailment.

I must admit, I was skeptical about acupuncture. I've had it before for stress relief and it really didn't do much. However, due to plaguing health effects from medical procedures I was on a fairly high dose of medication with marginal relief. I was desperate for relief from neuropathy and the rehab doc suggested acupuncture. I chose North Nassau Acupuncture based on their two locations, in Great Neck and Syosset which were convenient.

They really try to make you as comfortable as possible with heated tables, essential oil misters, heat lamps and eye pillows on top of the acupuncture. The treatment rooms are always clean and comfortable. They work on your issues while giving reassurance and guidance. They also have suggestions for herbal supplements that may enhance your treatment but there is no pressure to buy anything. I have had treatments by Meghan, Angela and Sabrina and I found them all very pleasant and professional in their practice.

I have been treated for about six months now and have been relieved of pain and the harsh sensations of neuropathy. I have been able to reduce my medication significantly thanks to NNA! I would recommend them to Family and friends

I have suffered from severe migraines for the past decade. Like many people with severe migraines, I couldn't take the pain anymore. It was effecting every aspect of my life, including my career and relationships. Frequent trips to the neurologists and trying to find medications that would help through trial and error was not helping. One day my father called me and said he had read about and met an acupuncturist that could help me. Never in a million years could I see myself trying this or knew that this was an option for migraines. Meeting Meghan and her team at North Nassau Acupuncture pretty much saved my life. It sounds corny and extreme, but anyone who has suffered through severe pain like this knows exactly what I am talking about. After meeting with Meghan and customizing herbs and acupuncture points to help me, I feel like I have finally gotten my life back. My business no longer suffers because now I can be there as much as I need to be. I can finally go out with my friends and maintain relationships, instead of sitting at home in the dark trying to sleep off the pain and suffering. Meghan and her staff are true professionals, caring, empathetic and work very hard to make sure you feel better. I didn't realize that there are so many things that acupuncture can heal you with. Even on my most stressful days she is able to find points that calm me down instantly. For anyone who is hesitant about doing this, trust me, it is worth a try and it doesn't hurt. You will be glad you did!

I have been to several different acupuncturists over the course of three years, and hands down Meghan is the best!!!! This is the first time in my life (since my injury three years ago) that I no longer have constant pain, and that is a direct result of Meghan's skill! She has a positive, calm and caring attitude, which is what I need from someone in this setting. She always checks in with me as a patient to make sure things are progressing and getting better. I don't love needles or anything, but look forward to my appointments with her because I know the relief will come after. Also, her professionalism and knowledge of acupuncture is outstanding! I have nothing but wonderful things to say about her! If you want relief from pain, Meghan is who you should see. Wish I could give her more than 5 stars! Also, Katie (at the front desk) is super sweet and is always professional as well. She and Meghan are a great team and are very accommodating of my schedule!

"Rarely does one get to thank someone for returning a quality of life issue to them. I have Spinal Stenosis and that caused me to only sleep in short spurts because of pain. A Dr. recommended that I try Acupuncture, luckily for me I picked North Nassau Acupuncture and met Meghan. She has taken me from hardly any sleep to now going 4 or more hours, for that I am extremely grateful. I have a goal to get back on the golf course, with the progress she has accomplished with me, I believe I will make it. To anyone who is considering Acupuncture talk to Meghan, she is the best, at least I think so."

I suffer from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), which basically

takes the rules of how a woman’s reproductive system should work and

throws them out the window. The rough road of PCOS and infertility is

what finally lead me to Meghan’s doorstep and my life has never been

the same. At time of my consultation I had not had a natural menstrual

cycle in about two years. Each period was induced by Provera (hormone

pills). Meghan took me in and between acupuncture treatments and a

custom herbal recipe over the past three months; I am amazed to say

that I am on my third period. A normal menstrual cycle leads to

ovulation, etc… my body is starting to follow the rules again! I feel

energetic, optimistic and healthy. Meghan’s warmth, knowledge and

patience (I ask a lot of questions) is what has made this a euphoric

experience. My week is not complete without seeing Meghan and her

awesome assistant Katie.

More than a year ago I was suffering from severe foot pain. It got so bad that I had trouble putting any pressure on my right foot. I was diagnosed with arthritis and was fitted for orthotics in order to relieve the pressure. That’s when my wife suggested that I try her acupuncturist, Meghan Van Dina. I can tell you that NNA was able to totally relieve the pain after approximately two months of treatments. Thanks to NNA today I am still without any pain in the foot. I still visit and find the treatments help me in my general health regimen and whenever I have any aches and pains. It also doesn’t hurt that Meghan could be one of the nicest and most compassionate people I know. I’m glad I was able to find her.
